Pools in St. George

St. George has more backyard pools than anywhere else in southern Utah, and most of them were built between the late 1990s and the late 2010s. That puts a lot of equipment pads at 10–20 years old: original single-speed pumps, first-generation salt systems, and heaters that have fired every spring and fall evening for a decade.

The housing stock is mostly stucco and tile-roof single-family homes on the benches and in the valley, from the 1970s–80s neighborhoods near downtown and Dixie Downs to the master-planned pools of Bloomington, Bloomington Hills, Little Valley and Green Valley, the 55+ community of SunRiver, and the golf and view lots of Entrada and The Ledges. Many were built with a pool and attached spa sharing one heater, which means valves and actuators that switch modes every day.

Elevation is about 2,800 feet. July and August highs sit above 100° for weeks and water temperatures pass 85°. December and January nights drop below freezing often enough that unprotected pumps crack. City water is extremely hard, which is why calcium scale on tile, salt cells and heat exchangers is the single most common thing I deal with in town.

What I see here

Common calls from St. George

SunRiver: pump quit, owner out of townMany SunRiver pads are original to the house. Capacitors and seals are the usual fix, and I can text the diagnosis to wherever you are.
Bloomington: spa won't heat, pool is finePool/spa combos with a stuck diverter valve or failed actuator, or a heater flow switch. Common on 2000s builds.
Little Valley: salt system reads Low SaltScaled cell from hard fill water. Cleaning or replacement, plus a chemistry correction so it doesn't come back in a month.
Green Valley / Dixie Downs: older pad, high filter pressureScaled cartridge or DE grids, sometimes a filter that was undersized when the pump was upgraded.
Entrada / The Ledges: automation fault after a stormMonsoon lightning and power blips knock out relays and reset schedules on automation panels.
Anywhere in town: water dropping an inch a dayMore than evaporation. Pump seal, skimmer throat crack, or the light conduit. I isolate it before anyone digs.

How I work

One call, one person

I'm RJ. You call (435) 703-5170, I answer or text you back, I come out, I diagnose it with amps, pressure and flow instead of a guess, and I quote repair and replace side by side. Then I do the work. No dispatcher, no stranger in a different truck next time.

If a $40 capacitor fixes it, that's the quote. If it's time for a new motor, you'll see the readings that say so.

  1. Call or text a photo
The pad, the gauge, or the heater display. I'll usually tell you what it likely is before I drive out.
  2. Diagnosis with readings
Motor amps, filter PSI, flow, and a full water test including calcium.
  3. Straight quote
Repair versus replace, real numbers, before anything gets touched.
  4. Fix it, check the rest
I look over the whole pad so you don't need me back next month.

FAQ

Questions from St. George pool owners

Do you cover all of St. George?

Yes: Bloomington, Bloomington Hills, Little Valley, Dixie Downs, Green Valley, SunRiver, Tonaquint, Entrada, The Ledges, Stone Cliff, downtown and the Red Hills. If you're on the edge of town, ask.

Is St. George water really that hard on pool equipment?

Yes. Our tap water often runs well over 250 ppm calcium hardness before evaporation concentrates it further. That's why salt cells scale in months, heater exchangers clog, and cartridges stop breathing while they still look clean.

My pool is a short-term rental. Can you keep it safe between guests?

Yes. Weekly service keeps chemistry in range between turnovers, and I'll text you right away if something at the pad needs attention before the next check-in.

Do I need freeze protection in St. George?

If your equipment doesn't have a freeze-protect setting or an automation controller that runs the pump below about 36°, yes. We get enough freezing nights in December and January to crack a pump housing or a heater header.

Can you work on the original equipment in a 2000s build?

Usually. Older Pentair, Hayward and Sta-Rite pads still have parts available. When something is truly obsolete, I'll say so and quote a replacement that fits the existing plumbing.
