Pools in Hurricane

Hurricane sits about 20 miles up the road from St. George and a few hundred feet higher, around 3,250 feet, with Sand Hollow Reservoir on one side and the Zion corridor on the other. Pools here are a mix: newer builds in Dixie Springs and around Sand Hollow Resort, homes near Quail Lake, and a large number of short-term rentals serving Zion and Sand Hollow visitors. Those rentals are where I get the most urgent calls: a pump that quits between check-ins, or a heater that won't fire the night the guests want the spa.

Hurricane is windier than St. George. The town was named after a whirlwind, and it earns it in spring. Skimmer baskets pack with red sand and tumbleweed debris in a single night, which is one of the most common ways a pump runs dry and loses its seal. The extra elevation also means colder winter nights, so freeze protection matters more here than down the hill.

Water is just as hard as the rest of Washington County. Calcium scale on salt cells, tile and heater exchangers shows up on every pad I visit in Hurricane, La Verkin and Toquerville.

What I see here

Common calls from Hurricane

Sand Hollow rental: pump dead, guests arriving FridayUsually a capacitor or a seized motor. Tell me there's a booking and I'll prioritize it.
Dixie Springs: spa heater won't fire on a cold nightIgnition fault, scaled flame sensor, or low gas pressure at altitude. The error code tells me which to bring.
Quail Lake area: baskets packed after a windy weekendPump cavitated, seal failed, pad is wet. Seal replacement and a leak check.
Anywhere in Hurricane: cracked pump housing in JanuaryWater left in the pump on a freezing night with no freeze protect. Replacement, plus setting up freeze protection so it's the last time.
Filter pressure climbing every weekRed sand and calcium together. Cartridge scale soak, or new media if it's past saving.
Salt cell scaled whiteHard water and pH drift. Clean, rebalance, and set a realistic cleaning interval for this water.

How I work

One call, one person

I'm RJ. You call (435) 703-5170, I answer or text you back, I come out, I diagnose it with amps, pressure and flow instead of a guess, and I quote repair and replace side by side. Then I do the work. No dispatcher, no stranger in a different truck next time.

If a $40 capacitor fixes it, that's the quote. If it's time for a new motor, you'll see the readings that say so.

  1. Call or text a photo
The pad, the gauge, or the heater display. I'll usually tell you what it likely is before I drive out.
  2. Diagnosis with readings
Motor amps, filter PSI, flow, and a full water test including calcium.
  3. Straight quote
Repair versus replace, real numbers, before anything gets touched.
  4. Fix it, check the rest
I look over the whole pad so you don't need me back next month.

FAQ

Questions from Hurricane pool owners

Do you really come out to Hurricane?

Yes, on regular routes. Hurricane, La Verkin, Toquerville and Leeds, including the Sand Hollow and Dixie Springs areas. If you're farther up toward Springdale, call and ask.

I manage several rentals. Can you be the one call for all of them?

That's exactly the kind of work I want. One phone number, one person who knows every pad, and a text to you after each visit.

Does the elevation affect my heater?

Some. Gas heaters derate with altitude, and some models need a high-altitude kit above a certain elevation. If a heater was marginal in size to begin with, it shows here first.

Why does my pool collect so much more debris than my friend's in St. George?

Wind. Hurricane gets more of it, and spring gusts carry red sand straight into the skimmer. Basket checks matter more here, and weekly service earns its keep in April and May.

What should I do about freeze protection?

If your pump has a freeze setting or an automation controller, make sure it's on and the sensor works. If it doesn't, I can add a freeze-protect timer, or at minimum show you how to run the pump on the coldest nights.
